Description | MMP23A and MMP23B, two Metallopeptidase type proteases, are type II membrane-anchored zymogens that are proteolytically processed at a conserved motif and converted into secretory and mature enzymes. The proteins contain prepro, catalytic, cysteine-rich, interleukin-1 receptor-related and proline-rich domains. The MMP23A and MMP23B genes have been reported to express multiple mRNAs, some of which are derived by alternative splicing. | |

This gene (MMP23B) encodes a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, and it is part of a duplicated region of chromosome 1p36.3. Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis.
