The protein encoded by this gene is a negatively-charged serum glycoprotein that is synthesized by hepatocytes. The encoded protein consists of two polypeptide chains, which are both cleaved from a proprotein encoded from a single mRNA. It is involved in several processes, including endocytosis, brain development, and the formation of bone tissue. Defects in this gene are a cause of susceptibility to leanness. PE-Cyanine®5 (PE-Cy5) is a red-emitting tandem fluorophore that combines phycoerythrin (PE) and Cy5. The donor molecule, PE can be excited by the 488-nm blue, 532-nm green, or 561-nm yellow-green laser and and transfers energy to the acceptor molecule, Cy5. PE-Cy5 has an excitation peak at 496 nm and an emission peak at 667 nm.
