Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is a naturally occurring compound that plays a role in many vital chemical processes in living organisms. In our bodies, flavonoids have anti-oxidant activity by absorbing short, potentially harmful wavelengths of light. Structurally, flavonoids are very similar to families of synthetic organic fluorophores due to the three fused benzene rings called an anthracene. Hence, Riboflavin can contribute to the endogenous autofluorescence of cells and tissues.
